“Jewelry Duty Friday”

Well, here we are once again, another beautiful Friday here in the Midwest.  You might have noticed that last Friday’s blog was not about “Jewelry Duty Friday” but instead it was about Blog Action Day2010. This year’s theme was water so everyone who blogged last Friday was supposed to talk about something to do with water and Blog Action Day.  Very cool concept and fun to be part of such a huge movement.

This week I will be participating in The Spooky Trunk Show in which 7 local artists will be gathering to sell their work.  I think it would only be fitting to highlight a few of the local talents who command recognition:

Beantown Originals – I had the pleasure of meeting Cheryl at another event we did together.  She is such a talented artist. I love the drawings she does of the llamas and sheep. They are hers and she harvests their wool, has it processed, sells it and knits some amazingly beautiful things.  I just love her work.

Studio GR3 – Tony doesn’t have a website yet but I will share one of the pictures he sent me of a quilt he has ready for Sunday’s sale.  I first met Tony at the Winterst Historical Museum several months ago. I immediately saw his talent in the quilts he had and the paper m ache figures he makes. They are very unique and cool.  Nice work Tony!

HandStampedbyLoveJeanne is a very talented stamp artist and scrapbook artist. She custom designs wedding invitations and anything you would need a card for.  Jeanne and I met while taking a business class together and as artists, we connected!  Lovely work Jeanne

Don’t forget: This Sunday is the Spooky Trunk Show! Come if you dare!

Madison Co. Covered Bridges Fest 2010

This “Bugs” Me

This YouTube video is just too gross not to watch.  Even though it’s made of glass, this centipede looks so real.  Check out the intricate work on the legs and antenna.

Do you have a good bug video to share?

“Jewelry Duty” Friday

What gorgeous weather we’ve had this week here in the Midwest!  Summer is trying to hang on and I love it.  The Bright colors popping out in the trees is only magnified by the warm sun.  It’s great inspiration when sitting at the torch.

Well it’s Friday and time to recognize those people who command recognition in their field.  This week the list happens to be 3 jewelry designers.  But, they are all different as you will see when you visit their websites.

  • Zur Designs – Connecting with Deb through twitter has been nice.  I like her work and particularly love her wire wrapped rings.  She has an excellent eye for design.  Well done!
  • Gabriella Design – Maryann Peper-Reynolds is so multi talented.  She has so many beautiful things on Etsy but I fell in love with her paper flowers.  They are so delicate and lovely, I want a whole bouquet!  Nice Maryann!
  • Northern Sea Glass – Joni is so fortunate to be able to use the resources of the ocean.  She beautifully designs jewelry pieces using sea glass and sea pottery.  I love the sea glass jewelry.  Beautiful!

SUCCESS! 5 Things Every Artist should Know

fall beadWhat is it that makes an artist decide to go into business?

Why would you want to abandon all of corporate America and the steady income to struggle to make ends meet?

You work harder and longer hours when you’re in business for yourself, right?  Times are harder now with the economy struggling to stay afloat and people tightening their money belts.

Why?  For the LOVE of the art, the passion for wanting to do it beyond anything else.  That’s why.  An artist feels it in their soul to create.  It’s like the need to breathe air.

But, how do you, the artist, know it’s time to go into business for yourself?  Here are 5 things that will help you decide it’s time:

  1. You are able to replace your current income with sales from your art.  This may be a gradual transition and once you track your art sales, make sure they are sustainable.  Take into account the “slow times” so you budget your money during “fat times”.
  2. You have a business plan. Too many people start a business without a business plan. A business plan just helps you stay focused on the direction and mission of your business.  It is also a necessity if you ever want to take out a small business loan.
  3. You have taken a small business class or take advantage of the numerous resources available to small businesses.  Everyone needs to take a small business class even if they have experience running a business in their career.
  4. You need a marketing plan. With the world of social media exploding , there is no reason not to market your business and most importantly, YOU!
  5. You need to have the hunger to succeed no matter what.  There will be obstacles to overcome along the way, but if you truly have the drive, you will get through it because you are willing to do what it takes to succeed.

Follow these things and you’ll be well on your way to a successful career.

What’s your feedback?  I would love to hear.

“Jewelry Duty” Friday

It’s Friday and I’m ready for the weekend! Saturday my girlfriends and I are taking our horses and going on a trail ride, then having dinner together and enjoying some wine and each other’s company.  I can’t wait!  This week I would like to pay respect to two artists that command recognition in their field;

  • Rolyz Creations- I first saw Roly’s work on Twitter and instantly fell in love with it.  Having done some polymer clay work myself, I really appreciate the intricate detail in her work.  So excellent Roly!
  • Good River Gallery –  Hannah Rosner is another person I first found on Twitter.  I love her flower beads and the natural looking colors make them look almost real.  Absolutely lovely Hannah!
