4 Lampworking Tools I Love

tools

from left - right: Tweezers, Marver, Tungsten Pick, Dental tool

As an artist, we covet our favorite tools.  Today I’m sharing my favorite 4 tools on my work bench with you and other artists:

  • Tweezers – I use my tweezers to pull quick stringers, pinch quick petals or ears on a bead or any number of different things. The uses are endless.
  • Graphite Marver – This marver is angled on the edge which adds to it’s versatility.  You can use the smooth side to flatten or roll a bead on.  The sharp edge is great for cutting in a specific design on your bead.  The sides of the marver are rounded which allow you to make soft curves on your bead.  This is a very versatile marver to have.
  • Tungsten Pick – I love this tool which allows you to poke, pull, and drag molten glass to change your design.
  • Dental Tool – Old, used dental tools are great to use at the torch.  This tool is an old carving dental tool that I use almost every day.  Just ask your dentist if he will save any of the old dental picks or tools for your lampworking needs.  One thing you want to be sure not to do with any dental tool is put it in the flame.  The heat is too much for the tools and they melt, leaving residue on your bead which will ruin it.

What are your favorite tools at the torch?

Take Better Photos: 5 Tips for you

Lime and Purple Bracelet

a tree makes a perfect photo background

Taking good photographs of your work can be a frustrating task. Many artists try to use a photo light box to capture great shots. I’ve used a light box myself and am still on the fence about them. I’m not sure that they actually capture the depth of color in my art. But then, I may need to take a summer photography course to improve my photography skills.
I want to share a few tips that work for me when taking close up photography of my work:

  • Use natural sunlight.  I prefer a partly cloudy day.
  • Photograph outdoors if at all possible
  • Use nature as a background or backdrop
  • Don’t be afraid to play with your camera
  • Keep in mind the time of day, example; morning+dew=great backdrop

Anything goes when photographing art or whatever you’re trying to capture.  Don’t be afraid to play, you might surprise yourself and snap a really great shot.

What tricks or tips do you use when photographing images?  Please share  your ideas, I would love to try them.
